Where to Stay in Malmö: MJ’s Hotel

If you’re the type of person that loves to seek inspiration, but it’s very conditional on the location, aesthetic, weather, and more, this isn’t just a blog post that’ll tell you where to stay in Malmö, but a blog post that is going to make you want to book the next flight out and discover the feeling that I felt when I stayed here.  When traveling, I love to take note of special places that leave me feeling inspired, happy, and replenished. There are very few places that do that for me. I seem to notice a trend though in what genuinely brings out that feeling out of me. I notice it when it’s at a quiet town, a town not a lot of people know about, in a small, boutique hotel that doesn’t feel the need to invite everyone, but only a select amount of people.

I feel it the most when I’m at a small beach town along the California coast that’s covered with fog, cold as can be, and so quiet you feel like you’re trapped in a dream. I feel it when I’m in the desert, surrounded by miles and miles of barren land, and when the rising sun makes every cell within me feel like it’s absorbing the power of the sun. I feel it when I’m driving through a backroad in Northern California, pulling over and laying down underneath an almond orchard on a sunny afternoon. I feel it when I’m on a porch of a quaint bed and breakfast, drinking locally made wine and making small talk with other guests. It’s been a while since I felt that, and during our 6-week trip throughout Europe, I was waiting for that feeling again. And finally, I felt it in Malmö, within the walls of MJ’s Hotel, outside the walls whilst exploring the small city, and in the comfort of the bed, listening to the birds chirp early in the morning.

An In-Depth Review of MJ’s Hotel in Malmö, Sweden

I seem to notice a trend in hotels that really speak volumes to me. I love a dark academia aesthetic with hints of femininity. That’s exactly what the MJ’s Hotel offers to its guests and visitors. It reminded me so much of my favorite hotel (ever), Granada Hotel and Bistro. Very much so that I found myself texting my girl friend Jessica, who used to run the marketing of Granada, about how much it reminded me of our favorite place. Side note, we have an endless thread sharing what reminds us of Granada, and MJ’s made it to the list.

This isn’t to discredit MJ’s Hotel though, as this hotel has its own vibe, something that no other property can replicate. While Granada caters to a dark, French bohemian vibe, MJ’s Hotel brings an understated opulence with its grand interior design, incorporating softly detailed pink accents in nooks and crannies that make you take a second look at each turn.

As soon as you walk in, a welcoming bar greets you with exotically infused cocktails and a beautifully curated selection of seats to choose from. The beautifully rendered pink courtyard seamlessly ties the whole property together. You can choose to take the elevator up to your room or go up the staircase that takes you to the dark and mysterious hallways with rooms bound to surprise you.

While most of the property is dimly lit, you’ll find that as soon as you walk into your room or take a glimpse at other rooms, there is plenty of bright light to go around. The contrast in design and in light makes this such a memorable hotel.

The Best Hotel in Malmö with an Amazing On-Site Restaurant

The cherry on top was MJ’s Restaurant. Food is my love language, and having been in Europe for nearly a month at this point of the trip, I discovered my (deep) love for Scandinavian food. There are lots of delicious, delectable restaurants, so if you’re looking for where to eat in Malmö, you won’t have a hard time finding a spot that will make your heart flutter and your stomach happy. However, I must note that MJ’s Restaurant was definitely at the top of my list out of all the restaurants I ate at in Malmö.

Dining at MJ’s Restaurant was an unforgettable experience. The transition from dining in the naturally brightly lit courtyard to feasting under the setting sun transformed the overall atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant. Opting for the Chef’s Choice, my boyfriend and I surrendered our culinary journey to the capable hands of the chef and staff. This decision led us through a stunning selection of dishes, each masterfully paired with a wine that elevated the experience. Needless to say, every bite was a revelation, and the wine pairings were blissfully harmonious, like matches made in heaven.

Let’s not forget about the breakfast. Unbelievably good. It was the best breakfast I’ve ever had in the entire country of Sweden. MJ’s Hotel had a wide selection of both savory and sweet bites to leave you feeling so full and wanting seconds… or thirds if you’re me. As a guest staying at the property, you cannot miss breakfast.

A Glimpse into a Room at the Best Boutique Hotel in Malmö

An in depth review of MJ's Hotel in Malmö Sweden

Ah, our room was so grand. So pink. So bright. Accompanied by green accent pieces as well as some unique decor pieces, there was a cozy bed with the most plush bedding, a couch perfect for lounging, a beautifully adorned bathroom, and some books to keep you entertained. To my surprise, there was some candy left underneath the bed with a card, specially made for those who like to take a peek at what’s under the bed. Aka me. It made my day when I saw that, such a nice touch to add.

The bedroom is so similar to how I would have designed my own bedroom, down to the pink and green color scheme to the flamingo lamp. There was such a cozy, warm, inviting vibe to the room, and it made leaving the room so hard and waking up to check out so difficult. If you’re looking for a quiet escape, a place that inspires you to get your journal out and start writing, a place to read that novel you’ve been dying to read, this is really it. Two days at MJ’s Hotel was not enough. I recommend staying there for at least 5 days to get the full experience. I guess this is my subtle hint at saying, this isn’t my last time visiting Malmö nor is it my last time staying at MJ’s. I will absolutely be back for more.

Is Malmö worth visiting? Yes, especially if you stay at MJ’s Hotel.

Malmö is my favorite city that I’ve visited in Sweden. There are many reasons why:

  1. Duh, MJ’s Hotel. There’s no better feeling than coming back home to this darkly romantic escape after a day out exploring beautiful Malmö.
  2. Malmö is the most diverse city in Scandinavia, which means there are lots of food options to choose from. As you walk through the city’s streets, you’ll encounter everything from traditional Swedish bakeries wafting the delicious scent of freshly baked kanelbullar (cinnamon + cardamom buns) to bustling market stalls offering fragrant Asian food or aromatic Middle Eastern falafels.
  3. Malmö is a coastal town, which means you’re going to find the best seafood and have the best sushi.
  4. It’s the perfect size. Not too big, not too busy, but still lots to see and eat! I’m sure you can tell by now, I’m a huge foodie. You can walk the entire city in a day, but there are still little pockets that are waiting to be discovered, making it the best city to visit in Sweden. Sorry, Stockholm, but Malmö really stole my heart.

When looking for a hotel to stay in Malmö, choose MJ’s Hotel. It’s quite literally the best hotel in the city, and I can confidently say that. It’s centrally located, just an 8 minute walk away from the station and a 2 minute walk away from all the good things that Malmö has to offer. They even have a house car if you need to get somewhere without needing to walk. I also wanted to mention one more thing- they have their own branded candies that you can find at the front desk (and under the bed) but you need to grab 50 of them. They’re so delicious. I brought a whole bag of them home and just finished my last piece of candy today. Today is September 6, 2023. I stayed at the property in the beginning of July.
