Gateway to Yosemite: Things to Do in Merced, California

There is just something about small towns that make my heart sing. There’s always a warm welcome that comes with driving into a small town. Every time I think of a perfect getaway, it always starts with, “What small town could I go and visit this time around?” Providing a much more homey, comforting feeling than a trip to a city, to me it offers such a fulfilling stay rather than a trip where you feel exhausted.

If you feel the same way, I strongly encourage you to check out the tiny but mighty little city of Merced. Located right in California’s Central Valley, this town has so much to offer. You’d be surprised at just how charming and memorable it truly is. In case you’re seeking a simple, wholesome getaway for the weekend or you need a pit stop before heading into Yosemite National Park, here’s your guide for things to do in Merced, California.

Everything to Know About Merced, California

History of Merced

Merced was founded in the early 1870s, and its name is inspired by the nearby Merced River. The name comes from “El Río de Nuestra Señora de la Merced” (River of Our Lady of Mercy), showing the area’s early Spanish influences.

Merced’s growth was significantly propelled by the Central Pacific Railroad, turning the town into a link between the farming communities of California and the rest of the nation. The trains were always loaded with agricultural produce ready to be shipped far and wide.

To this day, Merced is still very much known for its agricultural influence to the rest of the nation. Merced’s fertile grounds are perfect for a variety of crops. Be sure to stop by the local farmers’ market or the Merced Fruit Barn to stock up on some produce before heading home. You can seriously taste the freshness in each bite.

Known as the “Gateway to Yosemite,” Yosemite National Park has always drawn visitors through Merced since its inception in 1890. Merced has happily embraced is roll as a gateway, providing a wholesome and welcoming stopover for millions en route to the park.

Finally, it’s also a well known college town. You’ll find lots of students from UC Merced strolling through the downtown and filling up the local bars and restaurants. This is the newest and youngest campus in the UC system, and its inception has brought out a burst of new energy, diversity, and growth to the town!

When you visit Merced, you’re literally walking through history. I recommend taking the time to walk all throughout the downtown area and take the time to notice all of the historical buildings that still stand today. Some have been repurposed into lofts, boutiques, hotels, and more.

Why Visit Merced

Merced is centrally located between San Francisco and Yosemite National Park; this location makes for the perfect median point between the city and the park. From Merced, the city is only 130 miles away, which makes for a great 2-2.5 hour drive, and Yosemite National Park’s entrance is 80 miles away from Merced; expect a scenic 2 hour drive from Merced as your starting point.

However, Merced is more than just a stopping point. I think the town has a lot to offer, and can be the perfect getaway spot for a 2-3 day getaway. With lots of restaurants, bars, and different boutiques to shop from, you really won’t be disappointed with a trip here. The weather is temperate and the people are incredibly sweet. You’ll really get that small town feel here, and will feel welcomed and safe everywhere you go.

Also, because it’s such a small city and has a strong community, you might even bump into the mayor during your outings!

You bet you’ll find a pretty good burger at Pretty Good Burgers. Located on 439 W. Main Street, this smash beef burger spot is to die for. Made with fresh ingredients, all their menu items come at a great price, and it’s a pretty vibey spot – it’s worth the visit.

Right next to Pretty Good Burgers is Little Oven Pizza, a NY style pizzeria. Specializing in handcrafted pizzas using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients from California’s Central Valley and committed to quality, this pizza spot makes everything from scratch, including their original recipe dough and homemade sauces and sausages. You can build your own pizza with a choice of red, white, or vegan tomato bases and an assortment of toppings like caramelized onions, roasted peppers, and house-made sausage. The menu also features unique meat and veggie specials which change periodically.

The Best Wine Bar in Merced

Simply put, Hi-Fi Wine is amazing. I just had to start it off strong before you kept reading. The perfect gatherings always start off with a bottle of wine, coupled with nice design, amazing music, and great vibes – that’s what Hi-Fi wine is all about. Hi-Fi Wine offers an inviting selection of West Coast wines complemented by simple bites and fresh baked bread.

In case you’re curious as to why it’s called Hi-Fi, it’s dedicated to just staying in the present and enjoying the moment. This was a concept inspired by the family’s old cabinet stereo that provided a soundtrack to many generations.

Whether it’s a casual tasting or a hang out with friends, Hi-Fi is the go to.

Vista Ranch is set on 20 acres of the historic Bear Creek Ranch. The property offers a diverse array of experiences, including a vineyard, a tasting room, outdoor picnic areas, and event venues. Tacos Hidalgo Taco Truck has the best tacos you’ll ever have in California – hands down. You can find this taco truck on 550 E Main St, right across from Merced Liquor. Their mouthwatering supreme (make sure you order them supreme) tacos are worth every penny. I recommend calling ahead to avoid waiting too long for your tacos.

If you’re looking for the perfect date spot or brunch spot with the girls, I highly recommend Rainbird. Rainbird inside the El Capitan Hotel is dedicated to providing the freshest farm to table dining experience featuring seasonal, local ingredients sourced directly from a close-knit community of farms such as Humble Rice Farmer in Winton, Burroughs Family Farms in Denair, and Vista Ranch in Merced, among others.

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and boasts a Wine Program that has received Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence in 2024, which features an impressive selection of nearly 75 varietals that emphasize the Central Valley, Central Coast, and Sonoma/Napa regions.

The decor is inspired by the regional rainbird’s song and migration patterns (as well as the California landscape). It’s incredibly aesthetic, and the food is absolutely delicious as well.

Best Italian Restaurant in Downtown Merced

A favorite among locals, Bella Luna is right in the heart of downtown Merced on Main Street that offers the yummiest Italian food and most well made cocktails. This family-owned restaurant prides itself on providing warm hospitality alongside a menu that celebrates the rich, hearty flavors of Italy. With a commitment to farm-to-table dining, Bella Luna sources fresh, local ingredients to craft dishes that are both healthy and flavorful.

Their menu is complemented by an excellent selection of craft beers, an extensive wine list, and innovative craft cocktails. Known for its very cute and romantic atmosphere, Bella Luna is an ideal spot for date nights, special occasions, or family gatherings.

The Go To for Breakfast and Late Night Cocktails in Merced

Native Son, also located inside the El Capitan Hotel, is another go to spot for locals, and a well loved spot among visitors. This is a casual takeaway eatery during the day with delicious coffees, but at night it serves as a bar with some of the best cocktails you’ll ever have. I was taken aback by their cocktail list and how good they were to sip on after a night out in Merced.

Order lattes and a breakfast burrito (before they run out!) in the daytime and craft cocktails at night, and you’re set for a perfect day in Merced.

The Best Coffee Shop in Merced

Saving the best for last, The Sensory Lab by ASIP has to be number one on your list of things to do in Merced. Whether it’s starting your day off strong with a coffee or getting an afternoon pick-me-up before heading to the next activity, you need to go to this cafe. It is seriously such a vibe. It has an Arts District LA vibe with a small town flair. The drinks are so well made, the food is delicious, and the vibes are just right. This entire warehouse is just impeccable and so well designed. It’s also very inspiring to work out of if you’re in a creative rut. There’s just something about it that screams inspo.
