I’ve added in some of the best underrated summer destinations, with two things in mind: affordability and relaxed, intimate getaways. Marry the two and you get the most memorable stay that won’t break the bank. Let’s go ahead and get started!

Lincoln City, OR: The Pacific Northwest’s Hidden Gem

Lincoln City is arguably one of the best small beach towns in the US. This hidden gem in the Pacific Northwest has so much to offer. Not only does it boast seven miles of scenic beaches, but it also provides a variety of attractions for every type of visitor.

This beach town is perfect for families, couples, and group trips with close friends. If you’re a fan of nature and hiking, you’ll love that it’s in close proximity to the gorgeous forests of Oregon. If you love seafood, you can go dip up for clams or eat at the multitude of seafood restaurants they have. The sunsets here are remarkable, and it’s the ideal quiet beach town that you see on movies.

Where to stay in Lincoln City, Oregon on the beach

If you’re looking for where to stay in Lincoln City, I’ve got just the place for you. This little plot of land with 3 properties, located on Wecoma Beach, has so much history to it, and the land that it sits on was discovered in the year 1925. There are three different houses on this plot of land, Watavue, which is perfect for large family gatherings, Creekside, which is perfect for a small family gathering, and (their newest addition, unnamed) a beach shack perfect for couples.

My good friend Jere’s grandmother discovered Wecoma Beach in 1925 and has since been known as one of the “pioneers” of Lincoln City! It’s a pretty neat thing to be able to stay in one of the oldest properties, with so much history and love put into the homes.

Jere’s late wife personally designed the two giant homes that you see, and since her passing, the property remains untouched but ready to welcome visitors and locals alike.

Wecoma Beach offers visitors a slice of coastal tranquility with its expansive sands and soothing waves. It’s a prime location for those looking to indulge in beachcombing, building sandcastles, or enjoying a picturesque sunset walk along the Pacific Ocean.

The miles of soft sand provide the perfect backdrop for families to bask in the sun, swim, and search for shells—and perhaps even crabs in the evening! Notable attractions include the Cherry Grove Pier, known for its excellent fishing spots, Barefoot Landing for its shopping and entertainment options, and the scenic Intracoastal Waterway. These spots highlight why North Myrtle Beach is a treasure for those seeking affordable, quality family time on the coast and a perfect underrated summer beach escape.

Cambria, CA: A Sleepy, Underrated Summer Beach Escape in Central Coast California

Cambria is one of those sleepy beach towns that always make you feel like you’re coming home. Located along the central coast of California, this beach town is tiny, but is sure to have a tight grasp of your heart. This is one of those places that you’ll always want to return to time and time again.

When you go in the summertime, make sure to check the weather app before packing your shorts and flip flops. Most of the time, the beach is foggy, misty, and cooler than most beaches that you’re probably used to. I love the fog, as it adds a sort of mystery to your morning walks.

This underrated summer beach escape is more for romantic getaways, and I totally recommend coming here with your significant other when you’re both itching to getaway for a few days. It is a family friendly beach town as well, however it has more of a romantic appeal to it.

Where to stay in Moonstone Beach

Cambria Beach Lodge is located steps away from Moonstone Beach. You’ll love falling asleep to the sound of waves in this hotel. I personally loved waking up, making a cup of coffee, and going on a walk down to the ocean, journaling my thoughts away on a bench.

It’s a very affordable boutique hotel, especially since the ocean is directly in front of the hotel.

Arcata, CA: Hidden Beaches in Northern California

Humboldt County is one of the most beautiful places on earth. From its mystical forests, to its mysterious beaches, and the spirit of the land, it’s really one of a kind. There are a lot of memorable towns in this area, such as Ferndale, Eureka, Fortuna, and so on. They have a wide variety of hotels, but I always recommend staying at a bed and breakfast when you’re up there. It’s the most special part of California, and always will be.

If you’re looking to visit Humboldt County, I recommend staying in Arcata (though Ferndale is a close second in my list). It’s a sleepy beach town with so many fun, unique things to do. You can visit Cafe Mokka for a sauna, hot tub, and coffee evening. You can go to Slice of Humboldt Pie and get some of the best pies ever, and have some ciders right next door at Humboldt Cider Company. Arcata is a sweet gem.

Bandon, Oregon: Underrated Beach Vacations Amidst Rugged Cliffs

If you’re into golf, I recommend a beach getaway at Bandon, Oregon. This picturesque location is not only renowned for its stunning coastal views but is also home to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, where you can enjoy world-class golf courses with gorgeous seaside landscapes. The resort offers several courses, each designed with the natural environment in mind, providing a challenging yet beautiful experience for golfers of all skill levels. After a day on the greens, you can explore the quaint shops and seafood restaurants in the town of Bandon. Additionally, the area’s rugged coastline and natural trails offer ample opportunities for hiking and photography, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Trinidad, CA: Least Crowded Beaches California’s Redwood Coast Offers

California’s northern coast is such a memorable place, and as I mentioned earlier, Humboldt County is a special part of California. A little north of Arcata is Trinidad, and you’ll feel so small just looking at all the redwoods that tower across the land. The majestic beauty of these ancient trees, some of the tallest and oldest living things on Earth, creates a humbling and awe-inspiring atmosphere that is unique to this region.

If you love places where the forest meets the sea, I recommend a beach getaway at Trinidad, California. This quaint coastal town offers stunning ocean views juxtaposed against the dense, lush backdrop of the redwoods. With its pristine beaches, Trinidad provides a serene escape for those looking to unwind by the water or indulge in activities like kayaking, fishing, and hiking on the nearby trails. It’s not only a haven for nature lovers but also a treasure trove of local history and culture, with small museums and historical sites that tell the story of the area’s past.

Plus, Trinidad’s local cuisine, especially its fresh seafood, is a must-try for foodies. I recommend staying at a bed and breakfast up here for a special, memorable getaway.

Point Reyes, CA: Underrated Summer Beach Escapes for Families

I can continue raving about the Northern Coast, and I will. Point Reyes, California is one of the best places you can visit this summer for a quaint, quiet, and fulfilling beach getaway. This scenic peninsula offers more than just beautiful beaches; it’s a sanctuary for wildlife, featuring a range of biodiversity from elephant seals to tule elk. You’ll have to bring your binoculars for this trip when exploring Point Reyes.

Visitors can immerse themselves in nature by exploring the numerous hiking trails that wind through coastal terrains and lush forests. Besides its natural appeal, Point Reyes is famous for its historic lighthouse, which provides breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and is a great spot for whale watching during migration seasons. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Point Reyes serves as the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable coastal experience.

Where to stay in Point Reyes, California

Olema House is truly one of the best properties I’ve ever stayed in. As someone who absolutely adores bed and breakfasts along California’s northern coast, this was a pleasant upgrade from the usual bed and breakfasts that I normally stay at.

The property is beautifully decorated, and their rooms are just so grand. With a giant garden to walk around in in the morning, a game room at the basement for a fun evening with your loved ones, and the town of Point Reyes to explore (you can simply just walk on over to the main part of town from the hotel), Olema House is pretty hard to beat.

Half Moon Bay, CA: The Quintessence of Underrated Beach Destinations in the USA

Another special place is Half Moon Bay, California. This underrated beach destination showcases a blend of coastal charm and serene landscapes that truly encapsulate the essence of a Northern California retreat.

The small coastal city is home to a variety of picturesque beaches, like the famous Mavericks, where you can watch impressive, towering waves and world-renowned surf competitions. For those seeking a quieter experience, the coastal trail offers miles of walking and biking paths with stunning views of the rugged shoreline. You can even rent horses to go on walks along the coast, which is pretty neat!

Art enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the numerous local galleries featuring works from resident artists, while foodies can indulge in fresh, locally-sourced seafood and produce at the region’s quaint eateries. Definitely check out the historic Main Street, with its delightful shops and boutiques, adding a touch of Gilmore Girls’ charm to the modern beach experience. With its blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and cultural attractions, Half Moon Bay is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

Half Moon Bay is home to the Ritz Carlton, which provides a luxury stay unmatched in its attentiveness to detail and an ambiance of understated elegance, as well as quaint inns and bed and breakfasts. Any hotel you choose to stay in will be such a treat in itself.

Lucia, CA: Hidden Beaches in Southern California’s Scenic Wonder

Now, if you really want a hidden beach stay and secluded getaway, I recommend a stay at Lucia, California. Tucked away along the pristine stretch of California’s central coast, Lucia is a gem that offers unparalleled privacy and natural beauty. This area is known for its rugged coastline and the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains, which provide a breathtaking backdrop for your retreat. Unlike more popular tourist spots, Lucia ensures a tranquil atmosphere where you can unwind to the soothing sounds of the Pacific Ocean. Here, accommodations often come with stunning ocean views and easy access to serene private beaches, making it an ideal spot for those seeking to escape the crowds and connect with nature. With its enchanting coastal forests and hidden coves, Lucia invites adventurers and romantics alike to explore its untouched beauty and find solace in its peaceful embrace.

Stinson Beach is another gem found just an hour north of San Francisco, offering a serene escape from the urban sprawl. This picturesque beach is nestled within Marin County and serves as a tranquil haven for beachgoers, surfers, and nature enthusiasts alike. Its wide, sandy shores stretch for miles, inviting visitors to enjoy long, leisurely walks or simply bask in the California sun. The small, friendly community around Stinson Beach adds to its charm, with local shops and cafes that boast a laid-back vibe reminiscent of a bygone era.
