MacArthur Place Review

Ah, there’s nothing I love more than a staycation. The perfect staycation in my book involves a destination that’s an hour or two away, two to three nights booked at a memorable bed and breakfast or luxury hotel with amazing amenities, and just going at it at a relaxed, slow pace.

After all – the whole point of staycations is to escape the hustle and bustle of our daily lives!

Layla

Layla presents a refined Mediterranean-inspired menu, spotlighting fresh California produce in inventive, seasonal dishes. The dining room is bright and elegant, with an open kitchen that adds a lively, convivial energy. Local Sonoma and Napa wines are expertly paired with each meal, and the staff is eager to recommend a perfect match. Guests rave about the attentive service and thoughtfully composed plates that transform every meal into a special occasion.

My recommendation? Tell your server what you love, don’t love, and allow them to pair the wines for you. Aka, go carte blanche. Sit back, let them take the wheel, you’d be surprised at how great the entire experience is.

Bar at MacArthur

The Bar at MacArthur exudes understated sophistication, blending plush banquettes and rich woods with inviting, intimate lighting. Cocktails are the highlight here, meticulously crafted by skilled bartenders using fresh ingredients and creative twists. A menu of savory small plates and shareable bites makes it the go-to spot for evening unwinding. Whether you’re relaxing after a day of wine tasting or gathering with friends, the relaxed yet stylish ambiance sets the perfect vibe.

The Porch

Start your day at The Porch, where the aroma of artisan coffee and fresh-baked pastries is irresistible. This cozy café offers both indoor and sun-drenched outdoor seating, making it a favorite spot for slow Sonoma mornings. The menu features locally roasted coffee, flaky croissants, and seasonal specialties that highlight the region’s best ingredients. It’s an ideal place to journal, read, or simply enjoy a peaceful breakfast before exploring wine country.

The History of MacArthur Place

San Francisco based influencer Danica Janae explains a thoughtful review on her recent staycation at the MacArthur Place in Sonoma, California

The history of MacArthur Place begins as a private estate set up in the 1850s by David Burris, one of Sonoma’s most prominent early settlers. The main Victorian house, constructed in the 1850s using wooden pegs and square nails, is one of the oldest such homes in Sonoma. Burris—a rancher, banker, and businessman—established the property as a 300-acre working ranch with vineyards, fruit orchards, hayfields, cattle, and especially prize horses called trotters.

Originally called the Burris Estate, the property was the center of both family and social life in Sonoma for five generations. The estate even served as Sonoma’s first bank, operated from the library of the main house before moving to the town plaza. Over the decades, the grounds hosted legendary social gatherings and were integral to the community.

In the late 1990s, Suzanne Brangham acquired the estate and converted it into the luxury hotel known today as MacArthur Place, carefully preserving its Victorian architecture while adding modern amenities and lush landscaping. The name “MacArthur Place” comes from its location on MacArthur Street, named in honor of General Douglas MacArthur after World War II.

Today, the historic core of the property, including the original house, continues to anchor the hotel’s blend of heritage and luxury for visitors.

Artist In Residence Workshops

One of my absolute favorite experiences at MacArthur Place is attending their Artist in Residence Workshops, which I’ve been able to partake during my stays. These thoughtfully curated sessions bring together some of the United States’ most talented local artists, makers, and creatives. Each workshop is intimate, hands-on, and welcoming—whether you’re a seasoned artist or just looking to try something new, you’ll leave with a beautiful piece and a deeper connection to the local creative scene.

What truly sets these workshops apart is the personal touch: instructors share their stories, techniques, and even their favorite parts of MacArthur Place, making every session feel meaningful and memorable. All artists also get to stay at their very own Artist’s Cottage during their week-long residency!

After partaking in two workshops, I never fail to leave these workshops feeling refreshed, inspired, and eager to display my new artwork as a keepsake from my stay. If you’re looking for a unique way to experience Sonoma, the Artist in Residence Workshops at MacArthur Place are an absolute must and one of the highlights I always look forward to during my visits.

The Pros & Cons of Staying at MacArthur Place

Some of the pros include its prime location (you can walk to downtown easily), gorgeous grounds and gardens, top-tier spa and amenities, and it’s dog-friendly!

Some of the cons include its high rates, can be booked out for weddings and conferences, and limited on-property nightlife (Sonoma is a sleepy town), and a parking fee for overnight guests.

Truly the Best Luxury Hotel in Sonoma

Even as a guest who was hosted by the hotel, my review is 100% honest and unsponsored. MacArthur Place delivers on personalized luxury and tranquil relaxation—ideal for special occasions, anniversaries, or a restorative solo retreat.

How This Stacks Up to Other Sonoma Hotels

This property compares favorable to the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn in terms of intimate vibes and personalized service. However I would choose the MacArthur Place over the Mission Inn because it’s a bit more modern and upscale.

And lastly, it’s more walkable and boutique than large-scale wine resorts.

I hope this review was helpful and had you falling in love with the property!
