The Epitome of LA Chic – Fred Segal
Growing up in Los Angeles, Fred Segal wasn’t just a store – it was such a status symbol. It’s the it thing to do as a cool girl living in Los Angeles. You went to the cool bars and events and had an amazing group of friends, and you all went to Fred Segal on the weekends. I mean, it was such an LA thing that it was even mentioned in the movie, Clueless.
I remember my mom talking about it and how great of a store it was, and she put it on such a high pedestal for me that I knew that’s where I wanted to spend my money when I grew up. And that I indeed did. I remember getting my first credit card and swiping it at Fred Segal for a brand new wallet, I remember going to the Malibu location tons of times and just spending hours there looking for a new piece to rock before driving up to Santa Barbara for the weekend, and I remember talking with my old coworker at Burro on Abbot Kinney about how she worked at Fred Segal and how my eyes just widened and I excitedly gasped at the fact that she even got to work there.
I also remember sending Fred Segal a DM asking what was the best email to get in touch with for influencer partnerships and getting ignored, lol.
Fred Segal is just so it, and when I saw an email (years later after my first DM) of an invitation to come celebrate their grand opening at Marin Country Mart, I was so ecstatic!
Perhaps I manifested it? No clueeeeee.
Marin Country Mart’s Newest Addition: Fred Segal
The first thing I thought of when I saw the email was, ‘Yeah that makes total sense that Fred Segal would expand to the Bay Area, but specifically Marin County.’
Marin County is where the cool LA girl goes to when she wants to go visit the Bay. She hangs out at Tiburon and Mill Valley, does her shopping at the Marin Country Mart, and gets a cute Airbnb at Stinson Beach with her closest friends. They knew exactly what they were doing when they were thinking of what place specifically to root themselves in Northern California.
In case you didn’t grow up in LA and you’re wondering, WTF is Fred Segal?
Fred Segal was a trailblazer in the retail industry, possessing an innate understanding of the Californian lifestyle and fashion scene. He truly understood the LA vibe and put it all into one store, Fred Segal. He tapped into a cultural phenomenon that shaped the shopping experience for generations to come.
To this day, the brand continues to maintain its iconic status. It’s not just a store; it’s a brand that has evolved and grown, but never lost sight of its commitment to style, quality, and the embodiment of the Los Angeles vibe. Literally when you walk into the store, you’ll understand. If you get the vibe, then you’ll embody the vibe and never look back.
I may not make any sense, but any Fred Segal lover knows I make sense and I know that as soon as you step into one of their stores, I’ll start to make sense to you.
Every product, every brand, everything – captures the spirit of California and has that magic that no other store can replicate. So many boutiques in LA (such as the one I previously worked in on Abbot Kinney) tried to achieve that same magic, but no one can do it the way Fred Segal can.
Event Recap
The event itself was fun. There were delicious hors d’oeuvres, live music, as well as super chic, posh, cool people. I will definitely be going back, especially for the GANNI flats that I saw when I was last there.
