Farmhouse Inn Review: The Perfect Sonoma Escape

Luxury Boutique Hotel in Sonoma: Farmhouse Inn

There are small pockets in California that I love to find myself in. These pockets, whenever I enter them, make me feel whole, warm, and happy. They give me that warm, fuzzy feeling, which is why I call them pockets. What makes a pocket, a pocket? you may ask.

I know I’m in one when I can smell the ocean breeze through my window.

When I can blissfully walk along a small town and peruse through mom and pop shops, facing everyone with a genuine smile and talking to the owners as if we’ve been friends for years.

When I take a deep breath on a cold, gloomy morning, and the sound of birds engulfs my senses. Closing my eyes, I can almost feel the trees sway and wave in the background.

There’s a calming magic in these moments, a feeling I often seek out in the hidden pockets of California. One such pocket, where you’ll find quaint, charming towns, mysterious forest lined beaches, and rolling hills of vineyards, is Sonoma County.

Although my visit was towards the end of the winter season and it was cold, gloomy, and wet, it added a more comfortable, homey vibe to my stay. I can confidently say no matter what time of the year it is, you’ll always have a place to call home in Sonoma County.

Today I am introducing you to a luxury boutique hotel in Sonoma County, Farmhouse Inn.

About Forestville, California

The one thing I love about Sonoma is that they have these small towns and unincorporated communities that have the friendliest, most welcoming vibe. You’ll never feel unsafe when walking around and exploring. Because they’re small towns, you don’t feel overwhelmed and you don’t hear traffic, which is absolutely divine if you live in the city like I do.

This is why Sonoma County is one of my favorite places to escape to, because it blankets you in so much peace and tranquility. It’s almost addicting to the point where you want to keep going back, and back, and back again.

Where is Forestville?

Forestville is just 54 miles north of San Francisco in Sonoma County. It’s situated near the beloved Russian River and is just a 10 minute drive away from its friendly neighbor, Guerneville. This small town has a population of nearly 4,000 residents, with a limited, but curated selection of restaurants and shops.

They also proudly serve the best pizza in Sonoma County at Sonoma Pizza Co – which is a must visit if you’re asking me.

Why should I visit Forestville?

I don’t know about you, but my favorite landscape is where the forest meets the vineyard, and that’s what Forestville is all about. Wine aficionados and outdoor enthusiasts have common ground in this town. You can sample local wines at nearby wineries and tasting rooms and go kayaking at the river or go for a hike through the redwood forest.

Forestville has a relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for everyone seeking a slower pace and sense of community. It’s perfect for couples and families.

Lastly, you’re all about sustainability, mindful travel, and slow getaways, Forestville is for you. From farm-to-table restaurants, eco-green hotels, and its laidback, artsy charm, you really can’t go wrong with a trip to Forestville.

What’s the history of Forestville?

Forestville’s history is rich with twists and turns, from serving as a buffer zone against the Russians for a Mexican land grant owner in the 1830s, to becoming a lumber and furniture industry hub thanks to Captain Cooper’s sawmill (the first commercial one in California!!), to transforming into a bohemian paradise for artists and writers by 1900 (Bohemian Grove). Even after the railway connecting it to San Francisco shut down in the mid-20th century, Forestville has always kept its charm, attracting visitors with its  undeniable “good life” vibe.

Where to Stay in Forestville: Farmhouse Inn, A Luxury Boutique Hotel in Sonoma Wine Country

Now that you’ve got the full rundown on Forestville, let’s talk about where to stay in Forestville. If you value sustainability, luxury, and fine wine, Farmhouse Inn is the place for you.

After staying at countless luxury boutique hotels, one ‘vibe check’ that I always look out for is if a hotel has a cat. That’s the telltale sign that you’re in the right place. Just like Alfred in the world renowned Royal Crescent in Bath, UK, and the adorable grey tabby in Alila Ventana Big Sur, you’ll be so happy to see a cute, chubby cat taking a nap in front of the fireplace in the lobby of Farmhouse Inn.

Providing a serene escape, Farmhouse Inn is both friendly and inviting in its atmosphere, luxurious and beautifully designed in its aesthetic, and delicious and filling in its restaurants. When you check in, prepare to be both satisfied and eager for your next visit.

A Peek Into The Barn Junior Suite at Farmhouse Inn

The Barn Junior Suite is a popular suite that most guests book at the Farmhouse Inn. I was a big fan of the modern farmhouse decor, making the room ultra cozy and plush. With its open floor plan, expansive windows, indoor/outdoor fireplace, spa-like bathroom, and giant balcony, it’s a suite that’s tailor made to be your home away from home.

The bathroom, with its heated floors, steam showers, and a tub with jets, was my favorite part of the room. I spent most of my time here, taking a bubble bath, indulging in the steam showers, and using the bath products that were all made at the property. Upon check in, there’s a “spa to-go” section where you can fill up a bag with handmade soaps, scrubs, and lotions. As someone who loves to practice self care, this was just the cherry on top for me.

Ah I almost forgot to mention, the views from the hotel room were just so memorable. You’re literally surrounded by beautiful trees, whether you’re on your balcony, or taking a bath, you’ll really enjoy being engulfed in the nature of Forestville.

Farmhouse Restaurant at Farmhouse Inn

There are two restaurants at Farmhouse Inn: Farmhouse and Farmstand. I have yet to experience Farmstand, however I heard that it provides a more casual affair than a meal at Farmhouse. Both are prized for their excellently made dishes, all from sustainably sourced ingredients.

Under the guidance of Chef Craig Wilmer, Farmhouse Restaurant just blows your mind. There’s seriously nothing I love more than a chef that creates culinary masterpieces and makes any dish just so magical and memorable. Beyond the meals, the service is a 10/10. You feel welcomed, happy, and just wanting more.

I was invited by Farmhouse Inn to experience the Merus Winemaker Dinner. The dinner was absolutely remarkable. The five course meal paired with the most excellent wines from Merus Winery was just an absolute treat to the senses. I would love to go back another time to do their regular six course meal. Perhaps for my birthday I’ll venture back out!

One of the Most Memorable Hotels in Sonoma County

Sonoma County is the gift that keeps on giving. I am so grateful that I was able to experience Farmhouse Inn and its restaurant. I will definitely have go to back to experience the spa, dine at Farmstand, take a dip into the jacuzzi and pool, and just spend an afternoon on the daybed, reading a book with my partner.

That’s the thing about Sonoma County, as I mentioned earlier, is that it’s addicting. I know it won’t be long until I’m back.

If you were looking for the best hotel in Forestville, I hope your search ended right here.
