Why Chateau St. Jean in Sonoma Belongs on Your Fall Bucket List

Fall in Sonoma is my favorite time of the year. The leaves are turning, the vineyards have that golden hue to them, and everyone is happier. The wineries are filled with people (tourists and locals), excited to either stomp on some grapes or have a glass or two of a new vintage, and restaurants are bustling, eager to show off their new fall menu. If you’re searching for a new Sonoma winery to add to your must-visit list this season, I highly recommend Chateau St. Jean.

Why Cheateau St. Jean in Sonoma is Worth the Visit this Season

Known for its beautiful French-inspired architecture, lush gardens, and delicious pours, Chateau St. Jean offers an unforgettable autumn experience in the heart of Sonoma wine country for all of its guests. From golden afternoon light on the patio to memorable tastings of their small-production wines, you won’t regret visiting this picturesque winery during harvest. Or any time of the year, really.

The Story of Chateau St. Jean

Chateau St. Jean has been capturing the heart and soul of Sonoma since its founding in 1973 by three visionaries who wanted to reflect the region’s unique character through exceptional wines.

Named after Jean Sheffield, the “saintly” figure who held her family together, the estate marries Old World grace with California innovation. (Also, we love a female founded winery!)

Its story began when the property’s original chateau, a French-inspired manor, was built in the 1920s, surrounded by lush gardens and stately oaks. The winery quickly became known for single-vineyard wines—which was a novel concept then—which showcased the variety of Sonoma’s terroirs, as well as award-winning releases such as the Bordeaux-style Cinq Cépages blend and renowned Chardonnays.

First Impressions of Chateau St. Jean

As I pulled up to Chateau St. Jean, the first thing I noticed was how secluded and far away it felt from everything.

When you enter, you are welcomed by lots of green: manicured lawns, lots of flowers, and oak trees towering the property. The chateau itself is stunning, it makes you feel like you’ve been transported to the countryside of France.

Overall, the entire aesthetic of the property give off a romantic atmosphere, perfect for girls get togethers and afternoon dates with your significant other.

During harvest, the estate is especially enchanting: the grapevines are heavy with fruit, terraces are bathing in that golden hour light, and seasonal blossoms make every corner into a photo opportunity. Everything about the property sets the mood for a special kind of wine country day.
