The thing about San Francisco that I’m not afraid to admit is that there is a severe lack of decent hotels. The Proper is in a terrible location, the Four Seasons is a bit dated (sorry), and the Z Hotel brands that are all over the city are just so bland. The Vertigo Hotel (an iconic hotel) was bought out and turned into a generic hotel called The Julian, and all other hotels that are majestic and stunning are old and incredibly costly. Negativity aside, some hotels that are worth mentioning and staying at are the Timbri Hotel and The Jay. There was nothing more refreshing than finally finding the best hotel in San Francisco, that is, the 1 Hotel. I can’t wait to share this review with you. The 1 Hotel totally exceeded my expectations and then some.

From the moment you walk into 1 Hotel San Francisco, you’re greeted by the scent of reclaimed wood and the sight of lush greenery—there are living moss walls and potted plants at every turn (and in your room as well!).
All 1 Hotels are different depending on their location. In the San Francisco location, you’ll notice that they took inspiration by Northern California’s landscapes, using organic materials, earthy tones, and plenty of natural light. The hotel is LEED certified, carbon neutral, and fiercely committed to sustainability. Forget single-use plastics—here, you’ll find filtered water stations on every floor, recycled glass bottles in your room, and thoughtful zero-waste touches everywhere you look.
I loved all the little details (and so did my cat, Chandler!), like plant-based rugs underfoot and cozy throws made from recycled fibers. Even the toiletries are eco-friendly, and there’s a rooftop garden where the kitchen sources its herbs and veggies.
It feels good to know your stay is leaving a lighter footprint.

Whether you’re here for work or play, you’re never far from the city’s best sights. Cat Friendly (and Dog Friendly Too!)
The best part about this hotel? It’s pet friendly. As a cat-mom, I was thrilled to find a hotel that not only allows cats and dogs but genuinely welcomes them. The staff made sure Chandler felt at home (they even gave him a welcome gift!), and there were plenty of cozy corners for him to curl up in.
If you’re traveling with your four-legged companion, just let them know when you book—they’ll make sure you’re set up with a pet-friendly room.
What It’s Really Like: My Stay at the 1 Hotel San Francisco
Check-in was a breeze, with friendly staff who seemed genuinely excited to share their favorite local spots (I left with a list of hidden gems I never would have found on my own). Even though I live in San Francisco, it’s always nice to hear new gems! It’s a great way to further explore my city.

I started my mornings with a stretch in the fitness center (it’s a teeny gym, if I may say so myself), followed by a stroll along the Embarcadero. Evenings were for ordering room service and watching a movie or sipping a cocktail made with local spirits in the hotel’s restaurant, Terrene, which focuses on fresh, seasonal, and sustainably sourced ingredients.
